Pottery I - Some of you are getting very far behind, your absences or late arrivals are really hurting you. Remember, if you miss a class, that time is supposed to be made up before or after school or during a learning lab time. If you come in late you are missing important instruction.
This week: All 3 groups are taking the MID-TERM TEST on Thursday!! Study your terminology folder notes.
Group A: You are working on your slab containers, the sides should be leather hard and you should attach them the first part of the week. Make sure you seal the inside corners with a coil and seal the outside seam by smoothing the clay. After the sides are together roll another slab for the base; cut and attach by scoring and slipping. After everything is attached you need to BURNISH, use the back of a spoon to compress the leather hard clay to a smooth, shiny surface. Make sure the corners are sharp and straight. Pay close attention to the lip, smooth and shape as you burnish.
Group B: You are on the wheel through Wednesday. We review trimming on Monday, remember you have to choose your best cylinder and bowl, fill out a self-assessment and place them on top of the self-assessment and put on the green-ware cart for me to grade. Thursday you are taking the mid-term and Friday you are going back to finish your slab container.
Group C: You are continuing to Coil through Thursday. You will watch the wheel throwing demo on Friday and throw on Monday, Nov. 1st.
Foundations of Design
This week you are finishing your Op-Art project, make sure you are adding color that is high contrast. On Wednesday we are beginning a new project about abstraction. We will learn the 3 styles of art and learn why talented artists would choose to create artwork that is abstract.
Visual Arts
We are working on self-portraits. Monday we continued drawing correct self-portrait proportions in our sketchbook. We are drawing from mirror's. We also reviewed Visual measuring as a tool to make sure you have accurate proportions in your drawing. Picture day is Monday and Tuesday, I took high contrast photos of you to use in your final large self portrait. After you draw a portrait rough draft on Wed and Thursday you will begin your final drawing on Friday.

Foundations of Drawing
Value is the relationship between light and dark. Many students think of shading when they think of value but shading is just one way of showing the relationship between light and dark. Using a basic understanding of value one can create a sense of depth in their drawings. For instance, lighter areas tend to pop off the page or come to the forefront of the drawing. Darker areas tend to recede and move into the back ground.
Students discussed two different types of value: flat value and graded value. Flat value is a single tone while graded value is the subtle shift between dark and light tones.
We’ve done two projects recently:

So far this semester we’ve discussed positive and negative space, graded value, symmetry and color theory. Our current project incorporates all of these concepts. We are working a radial design that allows the students to demonstrate. All of these concepts will be presented on next weeks quiz.

Over the last few weeks our visual arts class has been discussing two major concepts: line and value. We discussed line as the basic structural element of any drawing. Students have done gestural and contour line drawings to explore the raw nature of line.
Recently we have been focusing on value and its role in creating the illusion of reality and depth. Value is defined as the relationship between dark and light. Students discussed two different types of value: flat value and graded value. Flat value is a single tone while graded value is the subtle shift between dark and light tones. See example below:

Week of October 18-22
Drawing I
Drawing I students have their still-life drawing due on Monday, Oct. 18th. During the week of October 10-14, Drawing I students began working on perspective drawing in their sketchbooks. Students drew 9 forms in 1-point perspective and 9 forms in 2-point perspective. We also identified different parts of 1-point perspective in photocopies of LSW building areas. On October 29th, students will be turning in sketchbooks with all activities done over the past three weeks.
On Thursday, October 14th, students went outside to sketch and photograph different compositions from around the building. These sketches and photos will be developed into a project drawing over the next several weeks.
If you have any unfinished sketchbook work, you need to have those completed and turned in by October 29th.
Painting II
Students completed and turned in their Expressionist self-portraits on Thursday, October 14th. After this project, students completed an intensity/value scale using two complementary colors in acrylic paint. This scale should be turned in during the week of October 18th. Beginning on October 18th, students will be working on a representational portrait that communicates a mood or emotion. Students will use dramatic lighting, body position, facial expression, dramatic lighting, and strong value contrast to create the mood and emotion.
IB Visual Art and Portfolio I
Students completed and turned in their first Independent Study theme-based project on Monday, October 11th. Students will be working on their Investigation Workbooks one more day on Monday, October 18th, then be involved in the development of their next theme-based project. Investigation workbooks for the second 6 weeks will be due on November 8th.

On the half days we are going to update our notes in the terminology folder to prepare for the mid-term exam coming up. We will also be doing some mid-term cleanup, going through supplies and cleaning out cubbies.
