Mr. Briscoe Visual Arts – 11/01/2011

Foundations of Drawing & Visual Arts
Over the last few weeks our visual arts class has been discussing one and two point perspective. Students have been learning about how the use of perspective rules can cause the visual illusion of depth.

One Point Perspective

Two Point Perspective

We’ve done two projects dealing with the use of perspective drawings. One Pt. Perspective DUE:10/28 & Two Pt. Perspective DUE:11/4

Foundations of Design
Foundations of Design students have recently finished a project dealing with color theory and symmetry (Radial Design Project). Students have recently reviewed the Elements of Design. The Elements of Design serve as the basic building blocks of all aesthetics. Everything in our visual world, from art & design to the natural world, contains one or more element of design.

Elements of Design Definitions:
Space – The areas between, around, above, below or within something.
Line – A continuous mark on a surface.
Color – An element of design with three properties, hue, value, and intensity. Color is created by reflected light.
Shape - An enclosed space defined by other art elements such as line, color and texture
Texture – an element of art that refers to the tactile quality of a surface. “The sense of touchability”
Form – Refers to the visual appearance or configuration of a composition.
Value – An element of art that refers to the relative darkness and lightness of an area.
Type – Type is the use of letterform to add a message that would be otherwise challenging to create through the other elements.

Students current project deals with the elements. The project divides the page in seven sections, each section representing a different element. Project DUE: 11/15

Mr. Klausing's Classes 11/8-11/17/10

Drawing I

We have recently completed our unit of study on Perspective Drawing. The final drawing of the school building or Summit Ridge is due Friday, Nov. 12th. On Tuesday, Nov. 9, students did a check for knowledge over perspective drawing. If you were absent that day, you will need to make it up.

Drawing I students are currently working on beginning activities of drawing portraits. Students received information on basic facial proportions on Monday, Nov. 8th. Students are now completing studies of eyes- 1 of their own and 3 from fellow students. These studies should be shaded and not look the same. Remember, everybody's features are different. When drawing eyes, for instance, include and be aware of the differences in length of eyelashes, color and value of iris, size and thickness of eyebrows, etc.

Drawing I students also did a study drawing of the different planar surfaces of the human head and face. This example will be up on the board through the end of the week. If you are gone from school during the time this is up on the board, you will need to get it from a fellow student.

After completing studies of the different features of the face, students will begin work on a self-portrait. We will also do portraits of fellow classmates over the next week as well.

Painting II

In Painting II, students are finishing up work on their self-portraits using arbitrary color. The class critiqued on Wednesday, Nov. 10th, and will continue the critique on Nov. 11th. Students will be allowed the rest of the class period on Thursday the 11th to work and the paintings will be due on Thursday, November 18th.

Painting II students also took notes and received information about 20th century art history, beginning with Cubism and going through Abstract Expressionism. Students will be presented with slides of master paintings they will need to memorize beginning the week of November 15th.

Painting II students will begin working on Abstract Landscape painting beginning the week of November 15th.

IB Visual Art and Portfolio I

During the week of November 8th -12th, students turned in their Investigation Workbooks, then did a variety of different life drawing exercises. This short drawing unit will end with a final figure/portrait drawing done on gray paper with black and white charcoal

Students will begin work on their next theme-based Independent Study Project beginning the week of November 15th.

Students who will be attending the Ray-Pec Art Contest on November 18th need to turn in their permission slips to Mr. Klausing no later than Tuesday, November 16th.

Mrs. Graves' art classes, 10/25-10/29

Pottery I - Some of you are getting very far behind, your absences or late arrivals are really hurting you. Remember, if you miss a class, that time is supposed to be made up before or after school or during a learning lab time. If you come in late you are missing important instruction.

This week: All 3 groups are taking the MID-TERM TEST on Thursday!! Study your terminology folder notes.
Group A: You are working on your slab containers, the sides should be leather hard and you should attach them the first part of the week. Make sure you seal the inside corners with a coil and seal the outside seam by smoothing the clay. After the sides are together roll another slab for the base; cut and attach by scoring and slipping. After everything is attached you need to BURNISH, use the back of a spoon to compress the leather hard clay to a smooth, shiny surface. Make sure the corners are sharp and straight. Pay close attention to the lip, smooth and shape as you burnish.
Group B: You are on the wheel through Wednesday. We review trimming on Monday, remember you have to choose your best cylinder and bowl, fill out a self-assessment and place them on top of the self-assessment and put on the green-ware cart for me to grade. Thursday you are taking the mid-term and Friday you are going back to finish your slab container.
Group C: You are continuing to Coil through Thursday. You will watch the wheel throwing demo on Friday and throw on Monday, Nov. 1st.

Foundations of Design
This week you are finishing your Op-Art project, make sure you are adding color that is high contrast. On Wednesday we are beginning a new project about abstraction. We will learn the 3 styles of art and learn why talented artists would choose to create artwork that is abstract.

Visual Arts
We are working on self-portraits. Monday we continued drawing correct self-portrait proportions in our sketchbook. We are drawing from mirror's. We also reviewed Visual measuring as a tool to make sure you have accurate proportions in your drawing. Picture day is Monday and Tuesday, I took high contrast photos of you to use in your final large self portrait. After you draw a portrait rough draft on Wed and Thursday you will begin your final drawing on Friday.

Mr. Briscoe Visual Arts – 01/10-14

Visual Arts
Over the last few weeks our visual arts class has been discussing two major concepts: line and value. We discussed line as the basic structural element of any drawing. Students have done gestural and contour line drawings to explore the raw nature of line.

Recently we have been focusing on value and its role in creating the illusion of reality and depth. Value is defined as the relationship between dark and light. Students discussed two different types of value: flat value and graded value. Flat value is a single tone while graded value is the subtle shift between dark and light tones. See example below:

FLAT VALUE

GRADED VALUE

Students have been working on a Ribbon Project that deals with depth, overlapping and the effect that a single lightsource has on an image. The rubric for this project is below:

Ribbon Drawing
1. Student demonstrated basic knowledge of drawing ribbons with depth and overlapping – 15 pts.
2. 2. Student used value according to the light source – 15 pts.
3. 3. Student used high degree of detail – 10 pts
4. Effort – Good use of class time and focused development of project – 15 pts
5. Craftsmanship – Neat, Clean, Complete

Foundations of Drawing
Value is the relationship between light and dark. Many students think of shading when they think of value but shading is just one way of showing the relationship between light and dark. Using a basic understanding of value one can create a sense of depth in their drawings. For instance, lighter areas tend to pop off the page or come to the forefront of the drawing. Darker areas tend to recede and move into the back ground.

Students discussed two different types of value: flat value and graded value. Flat value is a single tone while graded value is the subtle shift between dark and light tones.

We’ve done two projects recently:

Ribbon Drawing – Graded Value Project
1. Student demonstrated basic knowledge of drawing ribbons with depth and overlapping – 15 pts.
2. Student used value according to the light source – 15 pts.
3. Student used high degree of detail – 10 pts
4. Effort – Good use of class time and focused development of project – 15 pts
5. Craftsmanship – Neat, Clean, Complete

Circles & Ellipses – Flat Value Project
1. Student demonstrated basic understanding of flat value – 15 pts.
2. Effort – Good use of class time and focused development of project – 15 pts.
3. Craftsmanship – Focus on neat, clean, complete. – 15 pts

Foundations of Design
So far this semester we’ve discussed positive and negative space, graded value, symmetry and color theory. Our current project incorporates all of these concepts. We are working a radial design that allows the students to demonstrate. All of these concepts will be presented on next weeks quiz.

Radial Design Rubric
1. Student demonstrated a knowledge of symmetry and radial symmetry. – 15
2. Student demonstrated a knowledge of positive and negative space, graded value and color theory (primary, secondary and tertiary). - 15
3. Student demonstrated high degree of detail – 10
4. Effort – Good use of class time.
5. Craftsmanship – Focus on neat, clean, complete. – 15 pts

Mr. Klausing's Classes

Mr. Briscoe's Class: 12/18-1/11

Well, life is hectic and I haven't had a chance to post in a couple of weeks...I apologize. What we've been up to...

Foundations of Drawing:
Foundations of Drawing has been continuing to work with contour lines. Contour line drawings are drawings that defy the outer and inner line by prohibiting lifting of the pencil. In other words contour line drawings teach you to view all lines as significant, forcing the artist to focus on detail. This is important because many people tend to focus on just the outline or just the obvious lines...well, not in my class!

Creative Hands Project:
We began a project using sign language letters to guide our drawing. Each student chose a series of words or a phrase, perhaps even their name, to sign with one hand. With the other hand they were asked to draw a contour line drawing of their own hand. Again this was used to practice focusing on detail by forcing the artist to look back and forth between the object and the paper.

Rubric:
1. Student demonstrated basic knowledge of contour line, value & overlapping. - 15 pts
2. Student used 10 or more hand gestures - 10 pts
3. Student used high degree of detail - 10 pts
4. Effort - Student took time to develop idea and complete project - 20 pts
5. Craftsmanship - Neat, Clean, Complet - 20 pts.

Shoe Drawings
Foundations of Design also started another contour line drawing but this time of shoes placed in a still life.

Rubric:
1. Student demonstrated basic knowledge of contour line - 15 pts.
2. Student filled space and used overlapping. - 10 pts
3. Student used high degree of detail - 10 pts
4. Effort - took time to develop idea and complet project. - 20 pts
5. Crafsmanship - Neat, Clean, Complete. - 20 pts

Foundations of Design:
We have spent the last two weeks talking about positive and negative space. Positive space is the space that represents the "object" or the space occupied. Negative space is the area all around the the "object".

We did a packet that practiced this concept worth 50 pts.

We also started a new project dealing with pos/neg relationships using transfer paper. The class is overlapping lines and reversing out the pos/neg space.

Rubric:
1. Student demonstrated basic knowledge of pos/neg space. - 15pts
2. Student filled space and used overlapping. - 10 pts
3. Student used high degree of detail. - 10 pts
4. Effort - took time to develop idea and complete project. - 20 pts
5. Craftsmanship - Neat, clean, complet. - 20 pts

Mr. Briscoe's Class: 1/11-1/15

Hello Class,
This blog is used as a way for you to stay up-to-date on what is going on in my class. If you've missed school or if you have questions about an assignment or project this site is intended to help you. The title of your class will always appear within the content of the posting. Look under your class for instruction regarding that weeks lessons and assignment.

Have a great semester!

Foundations of Drawing:

This week we introduced you to two basic elements of art: line and value. We discussed how line, more specifically the stroke of a line, is used as the basic structure for a drawing. Stroke refers to the weight of the line that gives variance (or difference) to the structure of a drawing. Differences of stroke can give a drawing a sense of texture, expression or the illusion of three-dimensions if used correctly.

Our current project employs both your basic understanding of line and value to create a drawing on the front of your semester portfolio. This project is worth 75 points.

Portfolio Drawing Rubric: 75 pts
1. Student demonstrated basic knowledge of line, stroke & value - 15 pts
2. Student did 5 or more drawings/designs on their portfolio - 10 pts
3. Student used a high degree of detail - 10 pts
4. Effort - Student took time to develop their idea and completed the project - 20 pts
5. Craftsmanship - Student was neat, clean & complete in their project - 20 pts

Foundations of Design:

We started the class this week discussing four major ideas: line, value, repetition and color.

The element of art known as line is simply defined as a continuous mark on a surface. We discussed how differences of stroke (or difference of the weight of a line) can be used to give a drawing a sense of texture, expression or the illusion of three-dimensions when used correctly. The line is the basic structure for most drawings and will be addressed throughout the semester.

We also discussed value. Value is and element of art that refers to the relative lightness and darkness of an area. We discussed how value relationships between black and white as well as in light and dark colors can create a sense of depth on the page; lighter values creating the illusion of nearness, darker values the illusion of distance or recession.

Color is also very important to design. There are many theories about color and many different concepts to discuss. Our focus this week was on the differences between warm and cool colors. We discussed how warm colors (ex: red, yellow, orange) tell our minds that an image is close or in the foreground. Cool colors (ex: blue, purple and some greens) tend to have the opposite effect, telling our mind that a image is in the background or farther away. In our project we are focusing on this contrast between warm and cool colors. I want to see you use warm and cool colors as a way of pulling objects to the front of your design and pusing other objects or space into the background.

Lastly we are using all of these elements and applying them to the principle of repetition. Repetition is simply the recurrence of elements within a piece. In your project you've been asked to take your elements (line, values, color) and repeat them in order to creat a sense of pattern.

We are currently designing the covers of our semester portfolios. The rubric for this project is below:

Portfolio Design Rubric: 75 pts
1. Student demonstrated basic knowledge of line, color, repetition & value.
2. Student used 5 or more patterns - 10 pts
3. Student used high degree of detail - 10 pts
4. Effort - Student took time to develop their idea and completed the project - 20 pts
5. Craftsmanship - Student was neat, clean & complete in their project - 20 pts
