Mr. Rice's Art Classes: Week of November 22. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone !!!
Graphic Design: Students finished Time Magazine covers, and are working on U.S. Postage stamps. Students need to bring in CD covers for next week's project. We are starting to use Photoshop and learning new skills.
Foundations of Drawing: Students finished their Portraits. We are working on grid drawings from photos. Students will draw grid by grid matching the lines from the photo and then add color and value using the photo as a guide.
Visual Art: Students are working on portraits and proportion. Students are finishing up packets to practice facial features, and shading facial features.
Sketchbook Assignment: 4 portraits in sketchbook. 1 per page. Face should fill a page. I will be looking for correct proportions, and correct shading. Students must draw from life. Sketchbooks are due: Wednesday Dec. 8.

Foundations of Drawing & Visual Arts
Over the last few weeks our visual arts class has been discussing one and two point perspective. Students have been learning about how the use of perspective rules can cause the visual illusion of depth.

Foundations of Design
Foundations of Design students have recently finished a project dealing with color theory and symmetry (Radial Design Project). Students have recently reviewed the Elements of Design. The Elements of Design serve as the basic building blocks of all aesthetics. Everything in our visual world, from art & design to the natural world, contains one or more element of design.
Elements of Design Definitions:
Space – The areas between, around, above, below or within something.
Line – A continuous mark on a surface.
Color – An element of design with three properties, hue, value, and intensity. Color is created by reflected light.
Shape - An enclosed space defined by other art elements such as line, color and texture
Texture – an element of art that refers to the tactile quality of a surface. “The sense of touchability”
Form – Refers to the visual appearance or configuration of a composition.
Value – An element of art that refers to the relative darkness and lightness of an area.
Type – Type is the use of letterform to add a message that would be otherwise challenging to create through the other elements.
Students current project deals with the elements. The project divides the page in seven sections, each section representing a different element. Project DUE: 11/15

Mr. Klausing's Classes 11/8-11/17/10
Drawing I
We have recently completed our unit of study on Perspective Drawing. The final drawing of the school building or Summit Ridge is due Friday, Nov. 12th. On Tuesday, Nov. 9, students did a check for knowledge over perspective drawing. If you were absent that day, you will need to make it up.
Drawing I students are currently working on beginning activities of drawing portraits. Students received information on basic facial proportions on Monday, Nov. 8th. Students are now completing studies of eyes- 1 of their own and 3 from fellow students. These studies should be shaded and not look the same. Remember, everybody's features are different. When drawing eyes, for instance, include and be aware of the differences in length of eyelashes, color and value of iris, size and thickness of eyebrows, etc.
Drawing I students also did a study drawing of the different planar surfaces of the human head and face. This example will be up on the board through the end of the week. If you are gone from school during the time this is up on the board, you will need to get it from a fellow student.
After completing studies of the different features of the face, students will begin work on a self-portrait. We will also do portraits of fellow classmates over the next week as well.
Painting II
In Painting II, students are finishing up work on their self-portraits using arbitrary color. The class critiqued on Wednesday, Nov. 10th, and will continue the critique on Nov. 11th. Students will be allowed the rest of the class period on Thursday the 11th to work and the paintings will be due on Thursday, November 18th.
Painting II students also took notes and received information about 20th century art history, beginning with Cubism and going through Abstract Expressionism. Students will be presented with slides of master paintings they will need to memorize beginning the week of November 15th.
Painting II students will begin working on Abstract Landscape painting beginning the week of November 15th.
IB Visual Art and Portfolio I
During the week of November 8th -12th, students turned in their Investigation Workbooks, then did a variety of different life drawing exercises. This short drawing unit will end with a final figure/portrait drawing done on gray paper with black and white charcoal
Students will begin work on their next theme-based Independent Study Project beginning the week of November 15th.
Students who will be attending the Ray-Pec Art Contest on November 18th need to turn in their permission slips to Mr. Klausing no later than Tuesday, November 16th.

Pottery I - Group A & B, you are working on your coil container and/or glazing your relief tile and thrown work.
Group C, this is your last week on the pottery wheel. You will watch a trimming demo on Tuesday. Make sure you fill oust a self-assessment on all finished work and place your bowl and cylinder on the green-ware cart.
Drawing I - We are still in the hall working on the perspective drawings. You should have all the structural lines drawn and be adding details the first of the week and be shading by Thursday.
Foundations of Design - Your abstraction project is due in class on Tuesday, the grace period due date is Tuesday, Nov. 16. We will begin a unit on Color on Wednesday. We will learn to mix colors and paint a color wheel on Thursday and Friday.
Visual Arts - We are continuing self-portraits. Your portrait should be drawn by Tuesday, 11/9. Once the drawing is complete pick up a shading packet to practice hard and soft edges with value. Have the packet approved then begin shading your self-portrait. Tentative due date: Wednesday, Nov.17.
